Dental Services at Glastonbury
There is an FMS dental service available for 24 hour coverage from the Wednesday to Monday of the festival. We have a fully equipped mobile dental unit and separate unit for sterilisation. The service usually provides morning and afternoon clinics and an on-call service the rest of the time. Each twenty four period we have two dentists and DCPs available and you will agree between yourselves how the period is covered for clinics and on-call.
The treatment is provided outside of an NHS contract and we ask patients for a donation equivalent to the fee they would pay for an urgent Band 1 treatment, or if they would have been exempt what they feel appropriate.
The types of treatment needs are fairly typical for an Out of Hours\ Dental Access service for a population approximately the size of Bath! Over the years the people coming to Glastonbury have changed to be mostly regular dental attenders. The types of presenting conditions include lost and damaged restorations, pulpal conditions, acute soft tissue infections and a limited amount of trauma associated with the festival and camping lifestyle. We look to provide appropriate treatment to enable them to continue to enjoy the festival and keep them going until they can see their own dentist.
We are fully equipped for the full range of treatments to deal with those problems with the basic range of materials. If teams have any particular favourite materials we ask them to bring them from their practices but have all the usual medicaments and instruments stocked.
Most of the dental team are Glastonbury veterans and have been providing the service for many years through sun, rain and mud but we usually look for a few new recruits each year. The basic requirements are:
- Full GDC registration
- Full indemnity or equivalent
- No supervision or training needs
- Recent CPR training within your CPD audit cycle
- Some experience of OOH, primary dental care and dealing with dental emergencies
When joining FMS you will need to produce a recent CRB or apply through the FMS application process.
