The Pit Medical Crew
The pit-crew run a simple triage system for the Pyramid & Other stage at Glastonbury Festival and the Main Stage and Radio 1/New Musical Express (NME) Stage at Reading. We have a small tent (3m x 3m) at the side (stage-right) of these stages where we have resuscitation equipment (Defibrillator, oxygen, suction, drugs, airway and circulation equipment) as recommended by the Resuscitation Council UK's Recommended Minimum Equipment for In-Hospital Adult Resuscitation.
A Consultant Anaesthetist, two nurses and an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) as well as at least two "first-aiders" are present from the start of the first band to appear on stage until the last band of the day has finished their performance and the tent is clear. This "Pit-Crew" set up was started about 15 years ago by FMS and was aimed at providing a resuscitation facility for the audience at the two main stages as well as a triage system to sort/treat people that needed medical attention and follows the advice of the Third Annual Rock Concert Safety Survey Report published by Crowd Management Strategies in February 1995.
Qualifications & Experience for working in the Medical Pit-Crew as a Doctor
Medical Qualification (M.B., Ch.B.) or equivalent
Registered with the GMC as Specialist in Anaesthetics
Registered with a Defence Union (M.D.U. or M.D.D.U.S.) or equivalent
Anaesthetic Qualification (e.g. FRCA) or equivalent
SpR 4 or Consultant Anaesthetist or equivalent qualifications
Having attended an Advanced Life Support assessment in the past 5 years (documented)
Qualifications & Experience for working in the Medical Pit-Crew as an ODP/Anaesthetic Nurse Practitioner
Qualified as an ODP/Anaesthetic Nurse/Nurse Anaesthetist or equivalent
Registered with a National Body (such as Royal College of Nursing etc.)
Capable & trained in intubation in adults (documented)
Having attended an Advanced Life Support assessment in the past 5 years (documented)
